Hinge Pattern Mastery: Preventing Lower Back Strain in Deadlifts & RDLs

Learn the mechanics of safe hip hinging in deadlifts and Romanian deadlifts. Protect your lumbar spine and master posterior chain recruitment.

1. Squat vs Hip Hinge Biomechanical Differences

A squat is a knee-dominant compound movement with significant knee flexion and vertical torso orientation. In contrast, a deadlift or Romanian Deadlift (RDL) is a hip-dominant hinge movement characterized by maximal hip flex/extension with minimal knee travel. The posterior chain (gluteus maximus, hamstrings, erector spinae) drives the entire lift.

2. Preventing Lumbar Spine Flexion ('Rounded Back')

Rounding the lumbar spine under heavy axial loads shifts stress from muscular tissue to spinal ligaments and intervertebral discs. Maintain a neutral spine by bracing the abdominal wall, pulling shoulders down into lats, and driving hips backward toward the wall behind you.

3. Keeping the Barbell/Dumbbell Close to the Shins

Allowing weights to drift forward away from the body increases the moment arm between the load and the lumbar spine, exponentially increasing lower back torque. Keep the bar path sliding directly against your thighs and shins.

4. Avoiding Lockout Hyperextension

At the top of the lift, complete the movement by squeezing glutes firmly into lockout. Avoid leaning backward into lumbar hyperextension, which compresses the posterior facet joints of the lower vertebrae.
