1. Understanding Anti-Extension Core Biomechanics
The primary anatomical function of the rectus abdominis and transverse abdominis is not flexing the spine (crunches), but rather resisting lumbar extension (sagging under gravity). An isometric plank forces the deep core musculature to maintain a rigid pelvic-torso cylinder against gravity.
2. Correcting Hip Sagging ('hip_sag')
Allowing the hips to sag downward toward the floor places severe compressive shear on the L4-L5 lumbar vertebrae. To fix hip sag, engage a slight posterior pelvic tilt (tucking the tailbone under) and contract the glutes aggressively throughout the hold.
3. Preventing Hips Hikethrough ('hips_too_high')
Piking the hips upward into an inverted V-shape unloads the abdominal wall and transfers weight to the shoulders. Maintain a straight diagonal line extending from ankles to shoulders.
4. Cervical Spine & Scapular Alignment
Avoid dropping the head or craning the neck upward. Keep eyes focused on the floor roughly 0.3 meters ahead of your hands, while pressing forearms actively into the floor to engage the serratus anterior.
