Bicep Curl Biomechanics: Fixing Elbow Drift & Body Swinging

Master bicep curl biomechanics. Fix forward elbow drift, eliminate torso swinging, and ensure full range of motion extension.

1. Anatomy of the Biceps Brachii & Humerus Position

The biceps brachii consists of a long head (originating at the supraglenoid tubercle) and a short head (originating at the coracoid process). Both heads insert onto the radial tuberosity to perform forearm supination and elbow flexion. Maximum hypertrophy requires maintaining a fixed humerus position pinned firmly against the lateral ribcage throughout the movement.

2. Correcting Forward Elbow Drift (The #1 Flagged Error)

In our daily biomechanical feedback logs, forward elbow drift ('elbows_drift_forward') is the single most common error during bicep curls. Allowing the elbows to travel forward shifts tension off the biceps and onto the anterior deltoid. Keep your humerus vertical to ensure continuous mechanical tension on the biceps.

3. Eliminating Torso Momentum & Cheating

Swinging the upper body backward during the concentric phase leverages lumbar hip momentum rather than biceps strength. To isolate muscle fibers, maintain a rigid core brace and neutral pelvis. If body sway occurs, decrease the dumbbell weight by 10-20% until strict form is restored.

4. Achieving Full Elbow Lockout Extension (180° Range)

Halting the dumbbell short at a 90-degree angle deprives the lower muscle belly of full stretch hyperophy. Lower the weight under control until the elbow joint reaches complete 180-degree extension before initiating the next rep.
